In the Beginning…

January 1st 0358 hrs

Happy New Year to me. After a drunken night of fun, I sobered up and headed back home. I am so tired and bored of being home on vacation. I’m thankful for the break in training but Arkansas gets old quick. All my good friends are still drinking the same beer and doing the same thing. I will be extremely happy to get back home to San Antonio. New Year’s resolution: start keeping a journal.

January 2nd 1100 hrs

My hangover is finally gone. I like to watch the news when I am near a television, but out here at my parent’s house it seems that all they get are the local channels. I’m not going to attempt to try the dial up connection, as it will only frustrate me to the point of madness. I guess I will just check my e-mail when I get home. It seems that something is going on in China; the local news reported some type of influenza virus sweeping them over there. The flu season was bad here this year. I received my flu shot on base, avoiding the shortages of vaccine. I’m glad I get to go home tomorrow and get re-connected with my nice high speed Internet connection and digital cable.

My damn cell phone doesn’t even work in this desolate place. The worst thing about being here is knowing I’m going to have to do a lot of flying to get back up to speed. When I signed up for naval aviation I didn’t think it was going to involve constant work and studying just to stay competent.

January 3rd 0609 hrs

My grandmother called this morning to tell mom that we were going to war with China and to try to talk me into going to Canada to desert the military. I honestly think my grandmother has lost it. I turned on the news half expecting to see some kind of bullshit trade embargo deal with China. The news went on to say that President Bush has agreed to send medical military personnel over to China for consultation purposes only.

Makes me wonder, what do we have in America that a big bad country like China would need? They have all the natural resources anyone would want. I keep thinking I may have kept a light on in my house back in San Antonio. I have two small solar cell panels on my roof but I am wired to the electric grid. I just use the panels to sell electricity back to the utility company when I’m away on deployment. They have already paid for themselves.

Latest Posts — ESSE Lite Machete Review

Written by Myroesh

I have been using ESEE’s light machete for about six months now. I placed my order with the folks at Machete Specialists, my package arrived promptly and without any delays. ESEE’s Lite machete has an 18″ blade that is .065″ thick at the tip above the handle. The blade is forged from 1075 carbon steel by Imacasa in El Salvador with a convex edge grind and a natural canvas micarta handle made by ESEE in the U.S. It came out of the box razor sharp and ready to go. The first thing I noticed about this machete is the balance, it was tip heavy, just the way one would prefer a chopper to be. The weight forward bias allows for a stronger swing with less exertion, and therefore, less fatigue during use. The length is a good compromise. It is short enough not to be unwieldy, yet, long enough to allow for plenty of reach. It cuts like a chainsaw and made short work of most everything i threw at it. Limbs up to 2 1/2″ could be cleaved completely through in one swipe, small loose hanging vines and twigs could be easily snap cut even with a backhanded swing, in minutes I had enough wood for a shelter and campfire thanks to how easily this machete handles chopping chores. It retained its edge well with no chipping (thanks in no small part to the convex grind) and resharpened to shaving sharp fairly easily with a standard file. The blade is carbon steel so even though the majority of it is painted some rust has developed along the exposed edge and on the laser engraving (see pictures below). Other than some minor rusting my only concern with the machete is that after some notably heavy use the handle scales seem to be loosening a bit. You have the option to purchase the machete with or without a sheath, the sheath is a very basic design made of cordura with a belt loop on either side at the top near the opening and two lanyard eyelets one at the top the other at the bottom. These lanyard holes would be an efficient way to attach it to a pack or fashion a sling for wear across the back if you prefer to draw over your shoulder. My only gripe with the sheath is, coupled with the incredible sharpness of the machete, it is very easy to slice open when re-sheathing. Over all I am very satisfied with the ESEE lite it preforms the tasks it was designed to do like a champ and other than some minor issues it has held up well. In my opinion if you are in the market for a machete a good place to look is Machete Specialists and this machete should be on your short list.
